How to care for your flowers
Flower Care Tips!!
So you just received a fresh flower delivery from a loved one and you want to preserve these and the sentiments for as long as possible, but how? Try these tips to ensure your flowers last longer.
If the flowers have come in a container or basket, make sure to add water in the floral foam until it stops absorbing and the water starts to spill out. Do this every 6-8 hours to make sure the flowers are getting a constant water supply.
If the flowers have come without a container, get them in a vase with fresh water as soon as possible, making sure the water level is high enough for the shorter stems.
Removing the packaging/wrapping is advised to enable the flowers to spread out and get some breathing room, and also helps you to see the different stem lengths in order to have the right level of water inside the vase.
Do not keep the flowers near a window or under the fan, set them in a cool, non-windy part of the room where there is no direct sunlight.
How to keep the flowers fresher for longer..
Changing the water regularly is a big part of getting a longer vase life for your blooms. As soon as you see the water in the vase getting cloudy, its time to change it.
Always remember to wash the vase with soapy water to remove all the bacteria that causes the flowers to wither.
Add flower food mix to the water for longer lasting flowers.
Remove all the leaves below the water line to avoid them decomposing and clouding the water.
Cut the stems every day about an inch, or, depending on the flowers in particular, a little more, in case the stems are going soft. Always cut the stems at an angle to allow more surface area for water absorption and never with a blunt scissor.
Yellowing leaves can be removed daily to maintain that fresh look, since the flowers will last longer than the leaves in most cases.
With roses you can remove the top petals which are browning and let the flower open newer petals.
If you have received lilies in bud form, there is a little more care required as they bloom. Lilies with multiple buds will bloom at different times, and as the flower opens the pollen will leave dark stains on the petals and any other flower it comes in contact with, so gently remove all the pollen from the flower to enjoy them for longer and keep them un-blemished.
Most bouquets will have a mix of locally available green fillers mixed in, and those will not last longer than a couple of days. You need to remove those from the vase as they yellow, to have the bouquet looking fresh.
